Dominion’s Project Plant It! Develops Future Science Leaders
For the sixth consecutive year, Dominion will cultivate learning about math and science with Project Plant It!, a program developed to educate children, plant trees and improve the environment.
Project Plant It!, which will soon be recognized by the National Arbor Day Foundation, distributes free tree seedlings to each participating student. The program provides teachers with a comprehensive kit of lesson plans, posters, stickers and other instructional tools that align with Standards of Learning in core curriculum subjects.
Project Plant It! has reached more than 100,000 students since 2007 and will be honored with the Public Awareness of Trees Award from the National Arbor Day Foundation in late-April 2012.
Students can boost their science IQ while watching videos and playing interactive online games about trees and the environment at www.projectplantit.com.
On the “Student” tab, there are several videos to learn all about trees and how to care for them. In addition, Project Plant It! has games and puzzles to teach students about plant life and tree vocabulary.
There are many other features on the website that will appeal to science teachers around Virginia. There’s a Teacher Toolbox listing all of the materials that can be downloaded at no charge. Don’t miss the “Get Active!” section with almost a dozen ideas—such as “Be a Scientist”—to get children out of the classroom for a personal encounter with Mother Nature.
“Project Plant It! continues to provide high quality instructional materials,” said Dr. Jean R. Young, President of VSELA and Supervisor of Science for Spotsylvania County Public Schools. “The science lesson plans, for example, sharpen a student’s skills in scientific observation and analysis. Also, the lesson plans emphasize 21st century skills such as communicating and collaborating in teams, while building a more global awareness about our environment.”
Visit www.projectplantit.com to view videos, order free tree seedlings (while supplies last), download teaching materials or play several educational games about the science of trees. Be sure to “Like” Project Plant It! on Facebook to view photos and stories of students making a difference in their communities.
